Our breakfast area
A post long overdue… our breakfast area!
This was the first “room” we worked on furnishing when we moved into our house almost a year ago, once we realized we couldn’t take standing to eat on the counter anymore. We knew this was going to be an area we spent a lot of time in since it connected to the kitchen, family room and hallway upon entering the front door. This aspect made the area both easy and difficult to style - easy because it wasn’t going to be a room needing of a distinct style or character, but at the same time it needed to be “universal” (while not being boring or basic) to fit the eventual stylistic choice we wanted for whole floor so it blended in seamlessly.
After perusing through inspiration online, the vision became clear - I wanted the area to be cozy yet airy. There was a ton of natural light which made the room bright and airy already, but the cool slate floor made it a bit “cold”. I opted for warm neutral tones with green/blueish green accents for contrast. Rattan was the perfect material for the chairs given the warm tone and effortless texture. We went with a simple, modernist table with not so much texture and instead opted for texture in the rug, seat cushions and table decor. Alabaster coasters and a marble napkin holder helped add some smoothness and gloss to the room.
You may have noticed the two odd pieces of topiary in the corners of the room - these have been my treasured possession for a number of years. I found them at a thrift store when I first moved to NYC, and have since brought them with me to every single apartment and house lived!
I painted the wall decor after searching for inspiration online - figured I could always paint over it if I got bored of it! For now, I’m very happy with it. If you’re looking for an affordable way to make abstract art, I’ve got a post coming up on how to DIY something like this.
Given this was the first room we worked on when we moved in and I’m so bad at keeping this website up to date, we’ve actually made some other changes to the room since then, including updating the baseboards to new 5-inchers which again modernized the room further. Perhaps when we change the decor I’ll post an updated look of the space. For a before and after look of the space, scroll down.
